IBM announces breakthrough x86 innovation - eX5

The Biggest Launch in the History of System X

For Immediate Release March 3rd, 2010 Carrolton, TX/Newport Beach, CA

Today, IBM announced a gamechanging portfolio of IBM System x and BladeCenter offerings based on the fifth generation of Enterprise X-Architecture: eX5.

Representing IBM's continuing investment in creating differentiated x86-based architectures, eX5 is designed to take x86 systems to an entirely new level - enabling clients to tackle their toughest challenges and participate in smarter planet opportunities.

IBM’s new IBM eX5 portfolio delivers quantifiable, differentiated value:

Five generations of bringing "systems" thinking to the x86 marketplace:

  • Long-term investment of more than $800M - resulting in IBM's unique and industry-leading eX5 architecture.
  • Systems that maximize memory, minimize cost and simplify deployment.

The only x86-based systems to offer the scalable memory options:

  • Up to six times the memory capacity - maximizing memory and minimizing cost based on current server technology.
  • 3.8 times more virtual machines based on current server technology
  • Minimizes VMware licensing - half the license cost to support the same number of virtual machines.
    • Real cost advantages:

      • Reduce database costs by up to 97 percent by optimizing I/O per-second throughput
      • Deployment savings with pre-configuration, automatic update and automated recovery capabilities
      • 10 times reduction in energy for enterprise configurations than solutions relying on conventional hard disk drives
      • 34 percent savings on management costs with IBM Systems Director 6.1

Momentum in the x86 server marketplace has shifted in favor of IBM System x and BladeCenter. IDC predicts that 53 percent of all systems revenue in 2010 will be x86 servers. With today's introduction of a revolutionary, enterprise-class x86 architecture, we are strongly positioned to increase IBM's share of the $26.2B

"This is the biggest launch in the history of System X. IBM has changed the game with x86-based systems. Deployment savings and scalable memory options provide s7 customers with significant value," comments Strategy 7's President, Joe Rodriguez.
